far too easy: words

Far Too Easy

Going into the wound again
the cuts are deep and the stitches painful
going into the wound again
who knows what we’ll find this time

and it’s far too easy, just to let it go.

I can’t get over the beauty of your landscape
milk and honey and room to spare
but you’ve got to spill red blood on green pasture
got to make rich soil richer still

Far too easy, just to let it go.

Out in the inner city playground
they’re learning a lesson for life
your mum, my mum, cussing down
cussing down the whole generation and the
sins of the fathers come tumbling down
through the years; fall on the shoulders of their
pretty little children – for God’s sake how can they
hold hands in friendship when there’s
so much debt of blood to be redeemed

Far too easy, just to let it go.

Tell it on the streets of Srebrenica
in the strongholds of old Belfast
take it up with Beslan’s children
tell them this is how the die is cast
neighbour rising up against neighbour
father taking arms against son
and the man without sin if he ever existed
who cast the first stone is a long time gone

I hear you say, what a funny little war
what the hell are they
fighting for?
things like that could never
happen here
never fear
far too easy, just to let it go

Only the clouds have simple lives
only the clouds can see both sides
going into the wound again
who knows what we’ll find this time

Far too easy just to let it go.
